Christina is awakened before dawn, assigned to escort a courier to the village of First Tower. Morael, roused at about the same time for morning devotions, is asked by a superior after the service to offer his friends a job. Yesterday, Thorvalld d’Kundarak, priest of Dol Dorn, led an expedition into the ruined tower to see what was down there. He has not been seen since. The offer is 300 gp per person if Thorvalld is returned alive. Morael finds Christina gone and Kylenar too busy with a research project that has fallen behind. Daelyn, however, is willing to help, as is Granik. With Oddwell nowhere to be found, he heads for the Clifftop Guildhall, desperate for muscle, which he finds in the willing arm of Osric d’Deneith. The three adventurers are assigned their job, and Morael returns to his duties. Descending into the Depths, they find evidence of much traffic and signs of combat, just before being ambushed by a vicious Choker. Pressing on, they meet a small bedraggled band of goblins, led by the warlord G’niss. He offers to give them a guide who knows a secret way into the lair of the Khyber cultists where, he assures them, his men saw them haul the still-living dwarven priest. They agree, and G’niss lends them the services of Mogg, a strange, blue-skinned goblin with red eyes. Mogg quickly leads them to a secret passage, but seems unhappy. After a fight with a pair of Dolgrims, he gives Osric his healing potion, and then confesses: G’niss means for them all to die in this raid, so that he can clean up all the spoils after the battle. A new plan is made, and the party promises Mogg a new life on the surface. Mogg shows his worth in the cult’s lair, using his psionic abilities to aid in the release of Thorvalld. Stealth comes to naught in the end, and a furious pursuit ensues. With Daelyn nearly dead, they reach the secret escape passage. Granik releases a Grick to cover their escape, and they reach the surface safely, even managing to procure payment for Mogg, at the insistence of Thorvalld.

Brightblade, feast of Dol Dorn, sees the friends meeting at the appointed hour. Eleina, as always, is late. While waiting for her to arrive, the party witnesses the eruption of a titanic struggle as a young Silver Dragon bursts from a tenement tower, which promptly collapses. The dragon is hotly pursued by several Dolgrims and their Dolgaunt master, who in turn are pursued by a mysterious woman of unearthly beauty. The party throws in on the side of the dragon; together, they dispatch the Dolgrims, while the strange woman deals with the Dolgaunt before turning and fleeing back down into the Depths. After explaining to the watch what happened, they escort the Dragon to Morgrave University, where they sell a sacrificial dagger held by one of the Dolgrims before turning their draconic ward over to the Dean of Arcane Studies, and partaking of the luxuries his office holds. That evening, Eleina gives a talk regarding her most recent expedition, and invites everyone to her home for a small party. When they arrive, they find the place in flames, with a lone goblin fleeing the scene. Morael and Kylenar pursue him, while the others enter the house to try to help Eleina. Sadly, the only trace of her is a charred corpse in the dining room. Meanwhile, Morael catches the goblin, and tries to persuade him to turn himself in. The goblin, with the snarled promise “I will remember you,” slits his own throat and falls dead. Exhausted and disheartened, everyone retires for the night.
